Everyday life-world has been colonised by capitalism with increasing expansion of market and unprecedented commodification of everything (Patnaik 2015: 3-13). The latter is the growth of new middle class resulted by the former (Varma 1998, Sridharan 2010, Lahiri 2014: 37-44). Former is the outgrowth of neoliberal capitalism in India since 1990s. It is a social transformation resulted by two reciprocal factors with variable results across the nation. This progressive transition is not just a change of polity alone. At this point of time I consider it is a progressive transition in spite of my reservations about the extrinsic capitalistic content in it.
Deliberative democracy is an advanced form of democracy where deliberations lead towards consensus and legitimation. However, consistent indications of authoritarianism have been increasingly appearing. Symptoms of deliberative democracy appear infrequently. The transition is towards authoritarianism and deliberative democracy. Democracy in India is in a bidirectional transition.
