Ink and pencil illustrations accompany stylized text that help children read the pictures. This picture book is from the Little Senses series which tells stories to help children with autism or sensory processing issues understand common experiences like social cues, eating unfamiliar foods, and sound sensitivity. A little help from a caring adult who has a clever train related way for the child to recognize social cues and how respond gets the boys back on track and they successfully complete their train set up with each child contributing ideas. When he forcefully makes all the decisions, the other becomes more and more frustrated and a fight ends the fun. And yet little white boy is the one who gets ALL of the attention with nonsensical cards that I'm sure the average child would not understand.Ī little boy excitedly begins building a train track with a new friend that likes the same game. WHY?ĭid both boys not feel hurt? Did both boys not need comforting? Did both boys not need a grownup to check in with them and make sure everything was okay? Nothing explicit shows or mentions that the white boy is on the spectrum or needs extra help or extra attention. Now.what happens next is the important part for me: the teacher talks with the little white boy and NOT the little African American boy. Understandably feelings are hurt, the friend storms off, and playtime stops. Two little boys are playing the white one fully just bulldozes over what the African American one wants. I feel like the author misses a great opportunity and was possibly racist as well? I would love to know what others, poc, think of this, and if I am way of base, then I acknowledge humbly, how much I have to learn and take it as a chance to grow. This one though I am giving a hard pass and will not recommend. This was a BIG miss for me it's part of the "little senses" series, and I have liked the others and recommended them.
